Vodafone, Telefonica to share European network sites

March 27, 2009 at 4:25 pm | In Telco's | Leave a Comment

Vodafone and Telefonica agreed to share network infrastructure in four European countries to meet surging demand for mobile broadband, while saving hundreds of millions of pounds in costs. The widely expected deal announced on Monday, the biggest of its kind to cover more than one country, was a sign of the need to save money as well as a more relaxed attitude towards equipment ownership and the success of flat-rate data packages.

The deal covering Britain, Germany, Ireland and Spain may be extended to the Czech Republic, the two companies said. They will share sites, equipment including masts, and power supply, but will keep their own radio equipment and vendors. “Its a real transformational deal,” Michel Combes, chief executive of Vodafone Europe, told reporters. Matthew Key, his counterpart at Telefonica, said: “The current economic situation was a catalyst.”

Ireland, Spain and Britain were the first of Europes developed economies to feel the impact of the economic downturn that has since spread to most of the world. Telefonicas sales in its home country of Spain grew more slowly than any of its other major markets last year, while Britains Vodafone cut its outlook twice in 2008, citing challenging conditions in Europe.

Telecoms carriers are also increasingly deciding that they do not necessarily need to own and maintain their own network any longer to provide the best service. “As soon as you realise that your network is not a differentiating asset any more, you find ways to decrease the cost of maintaining it: sharing it or outsourcing it,” said Michele Campriani, CEO of telecom software firm Accanto Systems. Combes said he did not foresee any regulatory issues because it was a passive network-sharing deal, meaning the two will not share active components that process and transmit signals.

He said they would present details of the deal, which vary slightly from country to country, to regulators in each country. Telefonicas Key said: “We will still compete on a retail business in terms of services for customers.” The European Unions Competition Commission said it did not have enough detail to comment. A spokesman for the EUs Information society and Media directorate-general said: “There is a possibility for national regulators to encourage the sharing of facilities as long as this takes into account the competition laws.”

Vodafone already has network-sharing agreements with other operators in several countries, including India, Italy and Egypt. It said it can save up to 10 percent in costs through passive sharing deals such as the one agreed with Telefonica. A Vodafone spokesman said agreements with France Telecoms Orange in Britain and rural Spain would be unaffected by the Telefonica deal.

Combes said the deal would have no effect on guidance Vodafone has given, but would support its targets for capital expenditure as a proportion of sales. Key said: “The impact in 2009 will be relatively limited … Benefits will start to come through post-2009 in a significant manner”.

The deal will allow Vodafone and Telefonica to offer better and wider coverage to customers as well as reducing the environmental impact of their network by cutting the amount of sites needed, the two companies said. Vodafone shares were down 0.3 percent at 1340 GMT, underperforming the European telecoms index, which was up 0.9 percent. Telefonica rose 1.4 percent and France Telecom rose 0.4 percent.

“The cost savings of this are relatively limited incrementally and, in Vodafones case, are part of what they had expected to reach over time,” said RBS analyst Chris Alliott. The two companies said they were also studying further cost savings in other related areas. The deal covers about 64 million Telefonica customers and about 77 million Vodafone customers.

Shares in top mobile equipment maker Ericsson fell 2.6 percent as the market anticipated slowing sales of infrastructure equipment through such sharing agreements. “In the short term, networking sharing deals are seen as a negative for the telecom equipment makers,” said Hannu Rauhala, an analyst at Pohjola bank in Helsinki.

Leased Paksat-I to be replaced with new GSO satellite

March 27, 2009 at 4:23 pm | In Information Technology | Leave a Comment

Pakistan will replace its leased Paksat-I satellite with the new Geo-Synchronous Orbit (GSO) satellite, for which an agreement will be signed with a foreign firm, official sources told Business Recorder.

The project, Pakistan Telecommunication Satellite System (Paksat-IR) , worth Rs 17.594 billion, will be considered by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) in its meeting on March 26.

Sources said the prime objective of the project is to design, develop/manufacture and launch a GSO communication satellite to replace the existing leased satellite Paksat-I, located at 38° East, by early 2011. The new communication satellite (Paksat -1R) will have 30 transponders, 12 in C-Band and 18 in Ku-Band, each of 36 MHz Bandwidth, they added. They said that the strategic objectives of the project are (i) to enter into a long-term relationship with the satellite manufacturer for acquiring know-how and transfer of technology (KHTT) to produce various kinds of satellites in future, with the ultimate aim of achieving self-reliance in this field/area; (ii) to establish, maintain and operate necessary satellite ground control stations for controlling Paksat-1R from within Pakistan; (iii) encourage participation of local industry in this project to the maximum feasible extent; (iv) design, assembly, integration and testing of both space and ground segments and gradually move towards undertaking the same activities for all subsystems of communication satellite; and (v) through Paksat Intl (Pvt) Ltd, market Paksat -1R transponder capacity to government and private sectors at competitive prices.

Sources said that the project is in line with the MTDF 2005-10 objectives and would provide better satellite communications for Pakistan. The project is planned to be financed through federal PSDP, ie, 15 percent of contract value of $222.26 million and 85 percent of contract value through long-term concessional foreign loan.

According to sources, the project would increase the teledensity and would introduce the latest satellite communication facilities in the country. Ecnec Chairman had granted anticipatory approval of Rs1089.176 million, including foreign exchange component (FEC) of Rs 894.323 million on May 21, 2008.

Sources said the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) considered the project in its meeting on April 30, 2008 and recommended that Suparco and Strategic Planning Division (SPD) will jointly endeavour to strike the best deal, keeping in view the quality of satellite and its related accessories, etc.

They said that a proper agreement would be signed with the manufacturers for the transfer of technology and training of the Supraco team. Suparco will hire best manpower for best possible technology transfer. According to sources, an independent project monitoring group, comprising representatives from Finance Division, Planning Commission and SPD, will oversee the project properly.

SPD would not only take due diligence of the scope, technical specifications and associated costs of the project, but would also ensure maximum transparency in the tendering, contracting/ procurement processes.

New iPhone software with copy-paste, no Flash

March 27, 2009 at 4:17 pm | In Cellphones | Leave a Comment

Apple on Tuesday unveiled next-generation iPhone software with copy-paste and multimedia messaging features but no sign of much-coveted Flash for digital video. Apple gave analysts and reporters a demonstration of the coming iPhone 3.0 operating system during an invitation-only event at the firms headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The software is available for outside developers interested in crafting mini-programmes for popular iPhones and iPod Touch MP3 players but the operating system will not be publically released until mid-year.

“Its a significant update,” said Gartner analyst Van Baker. “When it ships, cut, copy and paste as well as multimedia-media messages will resonate most with consumers.”

IPhone 3.0 software will be a free upgrade for owners of the multi-function, Internet-linked mobile telephones. The new software will cost iPod Touch users about 10 dollars each.

The improvements in iPhone 3.0 addressed some of the complaints that iPhones lacked functions basic in competitors such as the Blackberry Storm, the Google Android G1, and the as-yet-unreleased Palm Pre.

Upgrades did not include being able to record video with iPhones or play video made using Adobes ubiquitous Flash software; an omission deeply irking many iPhone owners.

During a question-and-answer session, Apple executives responded with “No comment” to clamours for video recording and compatibility with Flash.

“They did not address the camera, which is a fairly low quality for a smartphone these days, and they also did not mention video support, which would be nice to see,” said Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin. “But, you can only do so much with the existing hardware.

This is still a significant update,” he said. Apple senior vice president of iPhone software Scot Forstall demonstrated how text and photographs can be copied from webpages on iPhone browsers and then pasted into an email or any other application.

Security and user-interface design complexities were blamed for the delay in adding it to iPhones operating system.”There are a lot of pieces we really cared about which we wanted to get perfect as opposed to releasing something that didnt quite work right,” Forstall said.

A new iPhone function allows users to search through their address books, calendars, email, and even iPods. IPhone 3.0 also contains satellite navigation applications, stereo Bluetooth links and Internet-sharing between devices and other computers.

Electronic Arts, Oracle, ESPN and others used the events stage to unveil applications tailored to iPhone 3.0.”This was the last bit of software that we felt was keeping us from developing for the iPhone,” said Seth Sternberg of instant messenger service Meebo.com. Apple is letting outside developers build voice chat into iPhone videogames as well as access address books, calendars, and iPod music libraries.

IPhone 3.0 also lets accessory makers connect devices, such as radios, to Apples smartphones. “Were going to allow developers to create accessories that can talk directly to the iPhone,” Forstall said. Apple said that this functionality could allow doctors to monitor patients on their iPhones, for example.

LifeScans Anita Mathew showcased an application that stores glucose readings on iPhones. “We will continue to create a world without limits for people with diabetes by partnering with Apple,” Mathew said. Apple has sold nearly 14 million iPhones in 80 countries since the devices hit the market in 2007. More than 800 million programmes for iPhones have been downloaded from its online App Store, according to Apple.

PTA directs cell phone companies to monitor Franchisees

He informed CEOs that PTA has also compared the sales of SIMs of February 2008 with that of February 2009 after launching of new regime. It was revealed that there was slight increase in sale of SIMs as compared to last year, which speaks of efficiency of the new systems and whatever concerns of mobile companies and others regarding decrease in sale of SIMs due to new system have proved wrong.
